My Book - Postcard from the Mirror: Understanding and Overcoming the Physical Aspects of Autism
The story of my family's transition from the Dali-esque world of Autism
into the world of neurotypical functioning through the use of coloured lenses
and the GF-CF diet. The book offers an insight into the minds of people like
us and an alternative explanation of some behaviours experienced within the
spectrum of autism. It gives advice on where to go to get the help needed
and to initiate your own programme.
Since Donna Williams made her mark in the nineteen eighties a multitude of
parents have seen themselves as pioneers of various therapies which have
enabled their autistic offspring to lead a better quality of life. Whilst
the medical profession take the ostrich approach to autism parents often find
themselves in the knowledgeable position for which they receive little or no
acknowledgement. Having once been in that position I believe it is important
for those of us fortunate enough to have gained knowledge to pass it on to
the next generation. Hopefully at some point the medics will take notice and
the tide of change will follow.
The ideas in this book are gathered from twenty years of nursing experience,
five years of health psychology, fifteen years of caring for a son with
Asperger's syndrome and a lifetime of living somewhere on the spectrum
myself, along with many other members of my family. Although we all live
fulfilling lives we know only too well the physical manifestations of this
condition. It is this side of autism I wish to portray to my reader. I hope
that by doing this parents and professionals can understand why certain
behaviours may be present in autism and how particular foods can be the
precipitating factor.
Having personally undertaken the Irlen transition and dietary management I
now use my experience to provide support for parents and sufferers who wish
to take this approach. I have used a signs and symptoms approach, which is
so far sadly lacking. How can we successfully correct another's behaviour if
we are unsure of the origin or communicative intent of that behaviour? I hope
to address both issues in an easy to read format, drawing on later
experience with autistic spectrum adults who have climbed aboard and shared
their experience.
For me this has been a truly enlightening experience that I wish to share
with others. From the darkness of a diagnosis which is so misunderstood to
the light of realisation that autism doesn't necessarily have to be there.
